Troops To Teachers Indiana

Transitions to Teach
Illinois Troops to Teachers assists eligible military personnel transitioning to a new career as public school teachers. Regardless of where a military career takes a participant while with our program, offices nationwide have been established to provide individuals with counseling and assistance regarding certification requirements, routes to state certification, and employment leads. Outside of what's on this site, the National Troops to Teachers Homepage provides more information and resource links.

Education Counseling
We educate participants on the requirements for Illinois teacher certification, information on teaching degree programs and alternative paths to certification. We also provide information on critical teacher needs in the state by discipline and location, and the transfer of certification from state to state, or reciprocity rules and processes. We also counsel participants on Career and Technical Education ("Shop" or "Home Economics" teacher certification)

Financial Assistance
Pending availability of funds, financial assistance may be provided to eligible individuals as stipends up to $5,000 to help pay for teacher certification costs or as bonuses of $10,000 to teach in schools serving a high percentage of students from low-income families. Participants who accept the stipend or bonus must agree to teach for three years in a "high-needs" district or school in accordance with the authorizing legislation and the maximum award cannot exceed $10,000. There are also several scholarship opportunities that state offices can direct eligible individuals to.

Referral to Employment
Illinois Troops to Teachers assists participants in locating employment opportunities in K-12 public schools, based on needs and available information. We build and share a listing of career fairs and our network of statewide contacts that apply to your geographic area. We offer resources and review of applications and employment paperwork to ensure participants have what it takes to succeed in entering the field of K-12 teaching.
